Practising trichologists are finding that more people are looking to them for help with hair and scalp problems; but increasingly, patients are also looking for appropriate and meaningful professional qualifications and proper ethical standards. These are among the main objectives of The Institute of Trichologists.
Entry to Institute membership is via a two-year distance learning programme, supported by seminars and clinical observation. The Institute’s training material has been comprehensively updated in recent years and embraces a whole range of scientific and medical topics. There are rigorous examinations at each stage of the training, and final year students have to pass a most searching examination comprising two written papers, a practical examination, and a viva (oral) examination. Institute tutors and examiners are experienced and highly demanding doctors, scientists and trichologists. The Institute is rightly proud of the standards it has set, which are indisputably the highest in the world.
Members of The Institute of Trichologists are trained in medical matters, but are not normally medically qualified (although there are some Institute members who are medical doctors and who have taken trichology as a supplementary qualification). To gain an understanding of the complex nature of the human body, trichologists study such areas as body systems, nutrition, and the chemistry and physiology of the hair and scalp. The trainee trichologist will also study pharmaceutical preparations, trichological procedures, health and hygiene, hair shaft problems, hair loss and scalp problems, chemistry, massage, electrotherapy, microdiagnostic techniques and elements of business management.

NOTE - REGARDING NVQ LEVEL 4 HAIRDRESSING TRAINING.
( Clarification due to regular queries regarding the above)
Obtaining an NVQ level 4 hairdressing qualification ( which contains some trichology), is not equivalent to The Institute of Trichologists training course. The training through NVQ level 4, would not enable a person to be admitted to The Institute of Trichologists as an Associate, Member or at any other grade. The Institute of Trichologists qualification to Associate Membership is over a 2 year period with full Membership taking a further 2 years.
