CPD seminar 2008
The Institute of Trichologists held their annual Seminar on October 29th 2008 at the Wella World Studios in London.
The event was extremely well supported by its Members, Students, Graduates and their Guests.
The day’s full program consisted of specialist speakers, all of whom held the audience captivated as the topics were diverse and fascinating, resulting in quite a few questions from the floor.
The Graduation ceremony took place of all the students who had passed their final year examinations with certificates presented to students who had passed their first year.
The AGM, for Members only, was held at mid-day, after which the Chairman, Mrs Marilyn Sherlock, gave her address updating the Members on the activities of the Institutes Board during the past year.

Mr Glenn Lyons FIT and Mrs Carole Michaelides MIT
Title: Hormone levels in male Androgen dependent alopecia & Diagnosis and treatment of Frontal fibrosing alopecia.

Glenn Lyons and Carole Michaelides studied together and qualified as associate members of the Institute of Trichologists in 1968. Since then they have enjoyed a very successful working relationship and are Senior Consultant Trichologists at the Philip Kingsley clinic in London.
Glenn and Carole are also both past governors of the Institute of Trichologists.
They have presented lectures to both dermatological and cosmetic societies and contributed articles to magazines, television and radio programmes.
Our investigation into male hormone levels was initiated from two perspectives.
- The accumulation of data from blood samples of men suffering from androgen dependent alopecia in our combined research project with University College Hospital London.
- To determine whether androgen dependent alopecia is indeed associated with increased virility.
Their interest in Frontal Fibrosing alopecia developed from the significant increase in cases seen in the practice.
Dr Andrew Wilson
Title: ‘Hair in Archaeology’

Dr Wilson is a lecturer in archaeological sciences at the University of Bradford. His research interests with hair cover the last 12 years, but contrary to most hair research scientists his ‘patients’ are usually long past help. His expertise in hair has been called upon for famous names including Sir Isaac Newton, Robert Stephenson, the Brontë sisters and many lesser known individuals in archaeology. His approach to such samples lies at the interface of archaeological science, forensic science and medical biosciences and has attracted research funding from the Wellcome Trust and AHRC. Given the fact that hair usually only survives burial under extreme environmental conditions, much of his archaeological investigations involve naturally preserved human remains recovered from deserts, bogs and frozen environments. Perhaps his most exciting work to date, published last year in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has been to reconstruct a timeline for the final months of frozen Inca child sacrificial victims left at the highest archaeological site in the world (6740 metres), using a combination of stable light isotope, DNA and drugs evidence from hair.

In 2003 Tony was appointed hair consultant to Remington, the American shaver and electrical hair product company to help with research and development of new products.
Tony works closely with the University of Bath, School of Material Science, one of Europe’s leading centres for research into natural and synthetic fibres. This work covers research into human hair conditions and disorders and the effects of materials and mechanical behaviour on hair fibres.
